Meerlust Estate Red

Historically only produced as a replacement for Rubicon, the first vintage of Estate Red was 1985. Since 2020 both Red and Rubicon are produced together, with the Red considered a ‘second label’ wine.

The Estate Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with a small amount of Petit Verdot in certain vintages. Every parcel of each variety was fermented separately before undergoing malolactic fermentation in 300 L barrels and large Foudré. After 8 months in oak, the components were blended and given another 8 months in barrel for harmonization before bottling.


Terroir

The Red is a true expression of the Meerlust estate and draws fruit from our four distinctive terroirs. Each terroir provides a unique element to the final blend.
